Mick Culley modified his
second kit into the short focsle HMS Aubretia. Here is what he had to
say . ...
"Compass Rose was my first attempt at modelmaking after a
30+ year lay off and is a fraction crude, but I've had many enjoyable
hours sailing her - so much so that I started on my short foc'sle, now
complete. Making the short foc'sle was a little more involved and I
found my dexterity and calibrated eyeball slowly returning. It also
sails a treat and the two ships in formation are a delight to behold.
I wasn't sure about a white WA colour scheme - it looked far too bright
before I weathered it - but on the water on a bright day she is almost
invisible, so I guess Dr. Peter Scott was right after all.
I wanted to make Aubretia because of her role in the Enigma battle,
i.e. forcing Fritz-Julius Lemp's U110 to the surface before suppression
by HMS Bulldog and eventual boarding and recovery of vital Enigma booty
by David Balme and his stalwart band of Jolly Jack Tars. I had some
badly photocopied pages with Aubretia on them but I've since bought
another book which has another pic of Aubretia in a totally different
camouflage scheme to the one I've used."
